Editorial from the Delaware County Times newspaper
Excerpts:
"Corbett was due at Central High School in Philadelphia last Friday to honor students and staff for their recent showing on statewide testing. It had not gone unnoticed that it would mark his first visit to a public school in the city, even as his first term comes to an end. It also has not gone unnoticed that many blame the horrific cuts that have beset the district, where layoffs and staff parings have shattered more of students, staff and parents, on the austere budgets Corbett pushed in the first three years of his administration.
Of course, Corbett has another view of those finances, including his belief that the real villain in the funding crisis that beset so many Pennsylvania schools was in the expiration of federal stimulus funds, and local decisions despite warnings not to do so to earmark those funds for recurring programs.
Corbett, himself a one-time school teacher, could have used Fridays event to deal with the issue head-on, to not only honor and thank the students and staff at Central for their sterling performance, but to explain his budget priorities. Instead, the governor chose to take another route. Literally."
