Related: About this forumI just saw the first negative ad against McGinty.
It was paid for by Toomey's pals, the Club for Growth. It showed Katie going through a revolving door symbolizing lobbying and government and claimed she kept money from somewhere.
Here we go.

(16,925 posts)the difference is that Toomey KEPT all of his lobbying money!

(4,482 posts)While she was Rendell's appointed secretary of the state's Department of Environmental Protection,
she awarded millions of dollars of state contracts to corporate employers of her husband (a fracking lobbyist). She was investigated and censured by the state ethics commission, which warned her if she did it again, she would spend 10 years in prison. Her boss, Fast Eddie Rendell, then the governor and now a fracking lobbyist himself, appealed that ruling to the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court. The Court upheld the ruling against Katie McGinty.

(18,219 posts)And it will continue. She was a flawed candidate to begin with, and this was one of the reasons. I hope that she and the PA Democratic bigwigs have plans to deal with this, since it was bound to come up.
Then again, I don't see why this is a problem with the Republicans, since they are pro-fracking and pro-nepotism. What's the problem??????

(15,480 posts)Just a couple of weeks of super slick, misleading advertising destroyed Sestak's 16 point lead in the poll and apparently neutralized, in 42% of Democratic voter's minds, his years of public service and ethical campaigning and behavior. Proof positive that far too many of the state's Democratic voters are pathetically susceptible to the power of slick ads. The only "scandal" about Joe Sestak? That he refused to be a yes-man for the Military Industrial Complex and all the other politician/puppets of the MIC.
So here we are - with a Pennsylvania senate election wherein Toomey has a $12 million war chest at the get-go. . So will Debbie, the DNC, and the DSCC pony up enough bucks to match Toomey's financial warchest? If he has $12 million to start, and since Pennsylvania is considered one of the most important Senate races, count on the fact he'll be able to double that amount.
Only 42% of state Dems voted for her in the primary. I can't speak as to the Fetterman supporters, but the Sestak supporters I know and worked with have little inclination to vote for McGinty, even against Toomey. They have described McGinty as a yes-woman, bought and paid for by the corporate branch of the Democratic party.
What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Those 3rd way Dems would rather lose the PA Senate seat than see it go to an experienced, intelligent, ETHICAL Democrat like Joe Sestak, who puts principle and his constituents ahead of political wheeling dealing? Well, a lot of progressive Dems might rather lose the PA Senate seat this time around than see it go to a 3rd way, inexperienced, bought-and-paid-for, censured by the state ethics committee and said censure upheld by the state Supreme Court, fracking-champion, opportunist.
Katie & her lobbyist husband are demonstrably in the pockets of Big Energy/Big Fracking. That's her only area of expertise. Now we have the very recent earthquake in one part of the state, and the massive gas line explosion in another part of the state. Both serve to increase public awareness of and concern about the impact of fracking/drilling and transporting of oil/gas. Fracking activity and income are very depressed so the frackers will not be handing out significant bribes/donations to either candidate. Those hearts and flowers, pro-fracking commercials from Range Resources have long since disappeared from the local air waves. When gas prices rebound, time enough to resume the PR efforts and hand out the bribes to whomever is in office at the time.
I don't see Toomey being vulnerable on the issue of fracking, because the regulations/oversight of the industry are on a state-by-state basis, and controlled by state elected and appointed officials.
Particularly if Clinton is the candidate in November, there will be a tsunami of GOP voters at the polls, pushing the button for a straight Republican vote. With McGinty portrayed as the poster girl for fracking, she will not inspire crossover voting.
At my polling place (I'm judge for my ward/district), we had over 400 voters. In the past 10 years I've worked at that location, our max turnout was 250. A LOT of new voters, mostly in their 20's-40's. Record number of absentee ballots as well. The Republican vote went over 52% to Trump, with 27% to Kasich & 20% to Cruz; Dem. vote 55% to Clinton; 45% to Sanders.
This is going to be one of the ugliest general election seasons ever.

Unfortunately, all we have is a terrible choice..... McGinty or Toomey. Ya gotta choose one or the other because not voting is a vote for Toomey. It might be how the republicans feel at the presidential level.
