Kathleen Kane seeks immediate $1 million in divorce case to cover legal bills prior to sentencing
SCRANTON Unemployed and facing "staggering" legal costs, convicted former state Attorney General Kathleen Kane wants a judge to order her estranged husband to pay her immediately $1 million of about $6 million in marital assets she contends she should receive in their divorce.
In a petition filed Thursday, Kane said she needs a partial distribution of joint assets held by Christopher Kane to pay her attorney's fees as she prepares for her sentencing and appeal of her conviction on charges of perjury and several other offenses.
The partial distribution will not hurt Christopher Kane because he will be entitled to receive a credit for any money paid once the distribution of assets is finalized, Kathleen Kane's attorney, Kim Giombetti of Scranton, said.
Giombetti said Christopher Kane has an interest in seeing that his wife has the best defense possible so that she receives a favorable sentencing "to avoid any negative effects on the parties' children that might stem from (Kane's) incarceration."
