House panel discusses tax policy changes
COLUMBIA House lawmakers continue to look at ways to streamline the state's tax policy, but it appears changing taxes tied to road funding may be spared.
House Tax Policy Review Committee Chairman Rep. Tommy Pope, R-York, said that while targeting gas or automobile sales taxes aren't entirely off the table, changes to them could affect already tricky infrastructure funding talks.
"I'm looking down the road, literally," Pope said. "Much like we (previously) earmarked the money for car taxes to go to roads, I can tell you it'd be harder to free that exemption to lowering our property tax bucket."
Rep. Bill Taylor, R-Aiken, said Pope's discussion with House Speaker Jay Lucas troubled him since it could limit the committee's scope of what taxes to analyze.
