Greenville Memorial files plan to avoid Medicare loss
Greenville Health System submitted an action plan to the federal government Monday in hopes of maintaining its Medicare contract after a review of a patient death at Greenville Memorial Hospital’s ER revealed a number of deficiencies.
But the hospital said it won’t release the plan or comment on it so the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has time to review it.
“We just submitted our action plan to CMS today. We cannot comment further on the plan because CMS needs time to review it, ask questions and conduct a follow-up survey,” said Dr. Scott Sasser, chair of emergency medicine for GHS. “We look forward to working with CMS to resolve any issues as quickly as possible.”
The events were triggered by a complaint about the March 6 death which led to a federal patient safety audit that concluded GHS’s contracted security officers improperly restrained Donald Keith Smith, who died because he couldn’t breathe.
