Senate begins roads debate, House and Senate leaders knock governor's plan
COLUMBIA - The Senate began a long-awaited debate on road funding Tuesday, as leaders of both chambers criticized Gov. Henry McMaster's call to use a pending House bond bill for infrastructure repairs.
Senators spent about 90 minutes discussing a Senate roads plan before adjourning for the day. The Senate is expected to take up the bill again Wednesday, with 11 days left in this year's legislative session.
Earlier Tuesday,House Speaker Jay Lucas, backed by dozens of House lawmakers, called on the Senate to take action on a House-passed road funding bill.
Lucas also said a pending House bond bill will not be used for roads, as requested by McMaster, who has threatened to veto any increase in the state's gas tax.
