Methodist Le Bonheur suspending court collections
NASHVILLE – With state Rep. G.A. Hardaway calling its collection practices “unconscionable,” Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare in Memphis is suspending court activity during a review of its delinquent bill policies.
Hardaway said this week he believes it is wrong for one of the city’s charitable hospitals to take thousands of people to court, including employees, to force them to pay bills they can’t afford.
“It’s just kind of crazy,” Hardaway said amid revelations Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare in Memphis filed 8,300 lawsuits against patients from 2014-18 in Shelby County General Sessions Court.
An MLK50-ProPublica report found Methodist is garnishing the wages of thousands of people and, in some cases, forcing their debt to increase dramatically through court costs and legal fees – all while receiving funds from the state to help offset the expense of uncompensated care.
