The South: Not all Bubbas and banjos

The South: Not all Bubbas and banjos

I thought this was the appropriate forum since it mentions Chattanooga, the movie Deliverance, and even talks about the way we vote. But I guess I could also have put it in Sports, LOL. I kind of generally love articles that are all over the place like this one is. Check it out. Hmmm, I could also put it in "Good Reads" I suppose.

The newest Masters champion is a proud Bulldog, a graduate of the University of Georgia. He owns the General Lee, the Confederate flag-emblazoned car from "The Dukes of Hazzard." And he loves God and his momma: He thanked the former and hugged the latter at the tournament's final playoff hole.

How much more Southern can you get?

"Bubba's name echoed as much through the pines on Sunday as the roars. He was embraced in this Southern town as if he drank, smoked, hunted and fished," wrote the Augusta Chronicle's Scott Michaux, before adding, "In truth, Bubba doesn't do any of those things."

That's the thing about the South. It's got all those stereotypes, but it confounds you at every turn.

and i agree that all areas have their "areas". the cities are pretty blue but as soon as you cross the corporation lines they go quickly red. my f.i.l. is as repub as you get, had to ask them, through my wife, to not use the word ni@@er around my daughter.

Because I lived 21 years in Ohio, and now 20 years in Georgia. I have many relatives from both states; some from very rural/red areas.

I hear the N-word used by relatives in Ohio just as much as Georgia.

I also have relatives in the South that live in small towns that are very liberal.

Again, the North is no better than the South when it comes to bigotry and racism.

Do I really need to post all of the news stories about skinheads from the area I grew up in (Toledo, OH).

I just popped into the Jersey forum and saw a post linking to another forum. I also read a post which referenced NJ 'nasty' on Saabs or something in that vein. I think people have a lot of wonky thoughts about places they've never been. But those in the Southern States seem to take as much of a beating as New Jersey! Anyhoo - like the article.

are TV shows, such as "Housewives of New Jersey"

At the same time, you have the mayor of Newark, Superman, that gives people a much better mental image of the state

thanks for sharing it

I think, too, that while some will define Texas as being in the South, I noticed it wasn't mentioned in this story (except in reference to a burger chain.) So, I'd guess the author is one that doesn't consider us as part of the South. I don't either, really. Yes, we were in the Civil War, but when I learned Texas history, we really just kind of breezed over that part, like it really wasn't as important as the rest of our in-state history.

But we're still just as reviled on DU...

Not only are we "red" states, but we are "flyover" states. Not only are we "flyover" states, but we have this history......................

Long live Davy Crockett and the Alamo!

we're all related due to the history of the United States. Why continue to divide, especially when it's against your best interests? But, I guess the mentality that continues to divide doesn't think it's against their interests at all. If the technology existed, they would cut and then lift out those states they didn't like, in order to have a continent of blue. At least until their own conservatives took over
