Bill would require security measures in government buildings banning guns
Any local government-owned buildings in Tennessee that place signs prohibiting weapons being carried on the premises, including stadiums, would be required to implement new security measures under a bill being advanced by a Republican lawmaker.
On Wednesday, Rep. William Lamberth, R-Cottontown, told the House Civil Justice Subcommittee when lawmakers approved the guns-in-parks law it "got into a very hairy area of law" on exactly when and how cities and local governments could ban firearms in certain areas.
The guns-in-parks law, which was approved in 2015, prevents any local government to ban people with handgun permits from carrying their weapons in a park.
"Quite frankly, we may have caused more questions than we answered," he said, adding that he hoped his legislation would clarify those questions.
