Abbott defends Cruz at law enforcement speech; Davis cites police support in receiving group’s award

In remarks to a law enforcement group, Attorney General Greg Abbott bemoaned Washington’s “inability to get things done,” while praising Sen. Ted Cruz – his former solicitor general – for doing exactly what he told Texas voters he would do if they sent him to D.C.

“I’m shocked that anybody’s shocked,” said Abbott, when asked by reporters about Cruz’s starring role in the recent government shutdown. “Here’s the deal. Texans and Americans have been frustrated that they elect people into office and they go into office and they don’t do what they said they promised to do.”

But, Abbott said, “If anyone promised to do anything, Ted Cruz campaigned every single day he was going to go to Washington, D.C, and do everything he possibly could to dismantle Obamacare. Ted Cruz did exactly what the people of Texas voted him in office to do, at least he tried to do, and so he did exactly what I thought and expected him to do.”

Earlier: In a queue up to the 2014 gubernatorial race, Wendy Davis, the Fort Worth state senator running for the Democratic nomination for governor, on Friday was honored by the state’s largest law-enforcement union as legislative crime-fighter of the year.

an expression in cross-country races where also-rans set an overly fast pace to get stronger opponents to push early, then flag later.

Cruz has set the "ideological" pace that Abbott (and Cornin') feel compelled to keep pace with. As the race wears on, he will labor with the extremist stances, and have to explain whether or not he will follow Cruz yet again. I think the Cruz fiasco won't play in more places than Peoria.
