John Cornyn is shadow boxing conservatives in Senate primary race

AUSTIN — On a recent Friday night, some 700 Fort Bend County Republican activists donned tuxes and ball gowns to hear a rising national political star at their annual Lincoln Day dinner.

When U.S. Sen. John Cornyn strode to the microphone, the audience still was chattering over drinks and diving into salad plates. It quickly became obvious that the minority whip of the U.S. Senate was the warm-up act for the evening's main attraction, an address by Texas' fiery junior Senator, Ted Cruz.

“Last year ... you sent me a re-enforcement,” Cornyn told the crowd. “You would be hard-pressed to find anybody better equipped than Ted Cruz to fight the good fight in Washington D.C.”

It was his best applause line of the evening.
