Hilderbran concedes GOP comptroller race to Hegar

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Katy Sen. Glenn Hegar captured the GOP nomination for Texas comptroller on Friday when state Rep. Harvey Hilderbran conceded the race, ending the need for a runoff.

Hilderbran's decision means Hegar is now favored to become the state's chief financial officer in the November general elections. Hegar was just a few votes shy of winning more than 50 percent of the vote, and barring a victory from absentee and provisional ballots, would have faced Hilderbran again on May 27.

"Texans owe Harvey Hilderbran a great deal of gratitude for his years of public service to the state of Texas," Hegar said in a statement after Hilderbran to spoke to him by phone. "Our campaign will now shift focus toward the general election."

Tea party activist Debra Medina and former state Rep. Raul Torres also ran for comptroller, but came in third and fourth. Hilderbran collected 300,000 votes and numerous endorsements, but was outspent by Hegar by more than $1.5 million.

I don't live in Texas, but he's another pro lifer asshole.

Hegar gained fame last session for authoring legislation that imposed some of the most stringent regulations on abortions in the country. Fort Worth Sen. Wendy Davis, a Democrat, gained national attention for filibustering the bill and is now a candidate for governor.

The GOP big wigs are trying to avoid run offs by getting candidates to drop out http://www.texastribune.org/2014/03/07/heading-runoffs-questions-about-dropping-out/

An email from a lobbyist at one of the state's largest law firms suggests there may be efforts underway to persuade three second-place Republican primary finishers, including incumbent Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, to withdraw from the May runoffs.

In a message sent to clients on Friday, Robert Miller, the chairman of Locke Lord's public law division, wrote that only the "hardcore of the hardcore will vote" in the May Republican primary runoffs and that he believed the races for comptroller, attorney general and lieutenant governor "are over before they start."

"Efforts are underway and will intensify to have Lt. Gov. Dewhurst, Rep. [Dan] Branch, and Rep. [Harvey] Hilderbran drop out of the races," wrote Miller. "I don’t know whether these efforts will succeed, but I am certain that money will rapidly begin moving to [Dan] Patrick, [Ken] Paxton and [Glenn] Hegar. I am in the process of organizing major Houston fundraisers for each of them."

I hope that these efforts fail.

BTW, Hegar is my state senator. He is an idiot
