Why the Austin school district may be forced to cut jobs, programs, even as taxes rise

Austin school leaders warn that the district could eventually buckle under the increasing financial pressure of the state’s share-the-wealth requirements unless it gets some legislative relief.

“We’re structurally set up for financial turmoil,” said Nicole Conley, the school district’s chief financial officer.

Simultaneously rich and poor, Austin is caught between the obligation to send the state a greater share of its property wealth and the responsibility to educate its own growing majority of economically disadvantaged students.

It is the state’s only large, urban district that must share its wealth while providing the panoply of services needed for a diverse student population. Meanwhile, Austin contributed 11 percent, far more than any other district, of the $1.1 billion collected for redistribution last year.

Did I just say the state of Texas is too damn beholden and too damn stupid to do anything right? Yep.
