Green skyline greets St. Patrick’s Day dawn over Dallas

As I was driving into work early Monday morning on I-30, I noticed the Reunion Tower ball glowing with a deep rich green color. As I got closer I could see the Omni Dallas Hotel and Bank of America Tower all glowing green. Then it hit me; it’s St. Patrick’s Day. It was still dark, and I knew it would make a nice feature photo for the newspaper and our website.

I knew the sun would be coming up soon, so I drove to one of my favorite places to shoot the Dallas skyline. I drove up a road behind the Belmont Hotel on Fort Worth Avenue and rushed to get my tripod set up and I knew I would use my Canon 70-200mm 2.8 lens to make the images. I was shooting an ISO at 1600 with various camera settings due to the light changing every 15 seconds. I would use a shutter cable so I would’t shake the camera during the exposure. I varied my exposures from f5.6 to f6.3 with shutter speeds for 50th of a second down to 20th of a second.

I quickly switched to a 24 to 70mm 2.8 lens to get more of the skyline. I went back to the longer lens because only three buildings were lit in green. The only problem I had was waiting for the Reunion Tower to be a solid green. It would cycle through several colors and then stop on a solid green for about 20 seconds. That was the moment.
