Texas Democrats-Please sign up and go to Senate District/County Conventions on Saturday-March 22

The Texas Democratic Party has eliminated the old precinct caucuses that took place after the Texas primary. Now you can go directly to the your county party conventions or senate district conventions which take place this Saturday, March 22. You can sign up and find where your county convention/senate district convention is being held on this link http://register.txdemocrats.org/countyconvention/signup

This is the best way to qualify or become a delegate to the state convention in Dallas. Rumor has it that the keynote speaker will be either Senator Elisabeth Warren or Hillary Clinton.

I have signed up and will be attending my convention on Saturday.

It’s not too late to attend your senatorial or county convention. Gubernatorial year conventions are my favorite because it’s not so crowded, you aren’t being confronted with all the people wanting to be delegates to national conventions and, by gawd, whoop-te-do reigns. This year it will be in Dallas the last weekend in June. And, yes, I will be there raising hell.

But first you have to attend your convention tomorrow all over Texas. Click here to find your convention and show the hell up. Even if you’re not going to the state convention, you need to attend your county or senatorial convention to meet folks and find out what’s going on.

If you’re at the state convention, I am asking you to support the re-election of Gilberto Hinojosa for state party chairman. He’s done a helluva job and deserves a second term.

I am signed up and will be seeing Juanita Jean tomorrow at our convention. Please sign up

5. Resolution on Voting Rights Act

Mar 2014

Here is the resolution that I submitted which was accepted

REINSTATEMENT OF VOTING RIGHTS ACT PRECLEARANCE REMEDY

WHEREAS, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was a historic piece of legislation that was designed to protected the voting rights of all Americans;

WHEREAS, one of the key remedies under the Voting Rights Act was the ability to require that the decisions of certain jurisdictions specified in Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act to preclearance of any changed in voting boundaries or methods under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act;

WHEREAS, the state of Texas has been subject to the preclearance provisions of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act since September 23, 1975;

WHEREAS, the Supreme Court of the United States struck down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act on grounds based on the reasoning behind the Dred Scott decision;

WHEREAS, the reinstatement of the preclearance provisions of the Voting Rights Act is necessary to protect the right of voters in the State of Texas;

NOWTHEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE DISTRICT 18 FORT BEND COUNTY CONVENTION, that the reinstatement of Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act as proposed by Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), Congressman John Conyers (D-Mich.) and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) is hereby urged and supported.

The Conyers/Sennsenbrenner compromise is not perfect but it is the best that we can hope for
