AUSTIN In the immediate celebratory afterglow of his GOP primary victory, Greg Abbott went to Hidalgo County, a stretch of South Texas that hasnt exactly been Disneyland for Republicans.
While there, Abbott pronounced that his goal was to break the record for Hispanic support by a Republican candidate for governor. That peak was reached in 1998, when George W. Bush captured at least 46 percent of the Latino vote statewide, according to exit polls.
More recently, that percentage has dropped to 38 percent, but even if Abbott does only a little better, it would leave Democratic rival Wendy Davis with few plausible paths to victory.
The jostling for the Latino vote is on.

(9,117 posts)This rosy scenario only begins to look plausible IF Dan Patrick loses the Texas Republican Primary run-off for Lieutenant Governor. Patrick has all too often raised the "illegal immigrant" boogeyman to appeal to hard-right white voters and unlike the tone-deaf Cuban émigrés of Florida, even Texas Hispanics can hear the Texas Tea Party's racist dog-whistle.
To quote Scooby-Doo, Rots of Ruck, Gregg!
And even then it's questionable. My Mexican hubby is so sick and tired of the Mexican and immigrant bashing that he'll not even consider anyone with an R after their name. Also not Kesha R. as he just pointed out.
