Diana Hobby, former Lt. Governor's wife, dies

HOUSTON — Diana Poteat Stallings Hobby, the wife of former Texas Lt. Gov. William P. Hobby Jr. (D), has died. She was 83.

Her husband told the Associated Press that she passed away early Friday due to complications from cancer. She was also suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

She is survived by four children, their spouses and grandchildren.

She was born in New York City on April 22, 1931. She married Hobby on Sept. 11, 1954. After moving to Houston and becoming the Houston Post's book editor, she obtained a doctorate in English literature from Rice University. She served on the boards of many Houston cultural institutions and devoted time to the conservancy of the environment.

William (Bill) Hobby, Jr. is still alive and is 82 years old.

His father, William Pettus Hobby, was the publisher of the Houston Post and the 27th Governor of Texas from 1917 to 1921.

My office was the middle window on the 5th floor (at the top of the photo). It looked towards Republic Square Park on the diagonal across the street. BTW, that building was voted the ugliest in Austin.

All of them have weird angles and it looked like it was Leggo-like modular construction with either stucco or tinted glass sidings. The worst part is that there were posts in most of the offices and a lot of acute angles so it was difficult to arrange furniture. Some of the offices were about 8'x10' and there would be a 2-foot diameter post right in the middle where you would expect a desk to be placed.

The other oddity was that the building did not meet the fire code even though the State Fire Marshall was also located in the building; however, since it was a state agency they received an exemption. It was built in the 80s and the state bought the building under some fishy circumstances due to the S&L bailout that occurred in Texas during the late 80s. The building was falling apart when I worked there so I can only imagine how terrible it is now.
