AUSTIN, Texas A new television ad by Democrat Wendy Davis goes into territory she hadn't touched until now: Republican Greg Abbott's use of a wheelchair.
A 30-second ad released Friday and titled "Justice" notes the Texas Attorney General recovered millions in a lawsuit after he was injured by a falling tree in 1984, and accuses him of not siding with victims like himself in Texas courts.
It drew a swift rebuke from national conservative groups and the Abbott campaign, which called it "disgusting" and "desperate."
"It's her choice if she wants to attack a guy in a wheelchair," Abbott said in an interview with the San Antonio Express-News editorial board after the ad's release. "I don't think it's going to sell too well."

(43,049 posts)maybe even seems a little desperate.
But, it's true-- and that's why the reaction is so swift and vicious.

(28,252 posts)Don't let the sonovabitch have it both ways. He's clearly using his disabled condition to solicit sympathy from potential voters, and he shouldn't be allowed to whine when Wendy Davis calls attention to his rotten policies on care for other Texans with disabilities.

(28,252 posts)If he's going to show himself heroically rolling down busy streets and through empty parking garages, there's nothing wrong with pointing out how he limited other disabled Texans to 1/40th the damage amount that he recovered. That is hypocrisy on a monstrous level, and attention must be paid.....

(4,695 posts)until she was able to work after receiving the mobile device and after the 18 month trial work period according to Social Security public laws/programs like, Ticket To Work. Through the, Ticket To Work Program, she could go back to work and then be off of SSDI. Then later, if the device starts to hurt or more surgery is needed or she is in pain, she would go back to SSDI without the up to 5 month waiting period. (Filling out the correct form right before going back to work makes moving back and forth from employment to SSDI possible.)
In my opinion, she should be compensated for past down time, by private party and SS, until she is working painlessly, and stays working. Being an attorney, Gregg Abbott should know this.
(Veterans may move back and forth between VA Healthcare System and Medicare-SS, every month. It is a way to get a second opinion and a written course of treatment.)

(112,101 posts)If he is going to run ads where he is shown in a wheelchair to elicit sympathy, then it is also fair to divulge his wealth and how he profited off of the system at the time of the accident. Most people are left destitute when an injury of that nature occurs.

(892 posts)He also shows himself to be tough, able and capable in the wheelchair, so he should be tough enough to handle the truth.

(28,252 posts)Can't say as I'm surprised; from the beginning the usual bunch has been luke-warm about her campaign, at best.

(9,006 posts)to squeal that "she's only picking on me 'cause I'm in a wheelchair."
Which is totally disingenuous
but this is the caliber
of Republican we have
in Texas today.
As another poster made clear
on this thread
Abbott's own ads
showing him in a wheelchair
plainly eliciting sympathy
inoculate Wendy from an ad like hers.
She's being much more fair
to Abbott in his disability
than any Republican
would be
to an opponent in a wheelchair.
Even Mother Jones had a story slamming Wendy for the ad. That was really disappointing to see.
I think Wendy's team worked in Abbott's wheelchair and his disability perfectly.

(51,550 posts)What it focuses on is his hypocrisy. He fights for disability compensation for himself, but blocks it for others.

These squealing pigs/hypocrites need to be voted OUT of office.

(51,550 posts)What would they prefer her to show, a paralyzed person? Then they would cry about exploitation of the disabled.
Fuck them. The truth hurts. I think it is a great ad.

(9,006 posts)It's just like the hypocrites (I want to say Christians) to act all victimized and persecuted.

(11,841 posts)Doesnt matter if it shows HIM in a wheelchair if people think thats what its about. Loser ad. She wont win more votes with it and someone in her campaign should KNOW that.
We may not like it, but thats the way it is.

(892 posts)I'm ashamed of the national media, especially Mother Jones, for making it seem like she's saying Abbott is unfit because he's in a wheelchair. Good God, he's used that thing in two commercials already, bragging how he can go faster than traffic in his chair, and how he exercises by pushing himself up parking garage ramps.
So fair's fair--now let's talk about the settlement he got that made him rich, and how he pulled up the ramp behind him by making tort reform a priority, so now people have trouble suing for even basic medical expenses, never mind making a fortune off their injury.
The liberal response is terrible, but not surprising. They don't know one damned thing about Texas, except how to get money out of the state to fund their own campaigns. I doubt one of them knows anything about Greg Abbott, or has seen one of his ads.

(28,252 posts)If the national party establishment is going to treat us like a Third World country, our out-of-state donations ought to reflect that. There's no point in being a cash cow when all you receive in return is a kick in the teeth.

(4,695 posts)in the last few days. Now it has dates of April 2014, or 4/17/14 over different segments as they roll along, through the Ad. Abbott is inferring to me, by the Ad, that the investigations from about two years ago are now being brought to the pre-indictment stage, as of April 17, 2014. Abbott may be prospecting for gold by signaling that Davis is getting indicted very soon.
In my opinion, Greg Abbott is a dirty liar.

(892 posts)Pass this link along to anyone you know who doesn't live here and is criticizing Wendy Davis' ad without considering the context:
Davis Says Wheelchair Ad Exposes Hypocrisy, But Abbott Calls It Offensive
Sample of comments:
Notice how not once has anyone disputed the claims the ad makes! Just the wheel chair. How does this Greg Abbott get off saying that is offensive? He sure does not care about being offensive when he attacks the LBGT community! Greg Abbott bigotry exposed! This man would sell his own family down the river for a buck!
Oh, please. It's an ad about medical issues and hypocrisy. Like the hypocrisy of showing yourself in your wheelchair in your own ads, but crying foul if someone else puts one in theirs!
My father was blinded in an accident. He did not collect mega $$ and never used his disability to gain an advantage over anyone else. I have NO sympathy for Abbott and I despise his views on just about everything!!
Complaints from the same people who call Wendy Davis "abortion Barbie".. That's rich.
