Rabid skunk bites Bellmead officer

A skunk tested positive for rabies after a Bellmead {near Waco} animal control officer was bitten trying to capture the animal in 200 block of San Pedro Street the afternoon of March 10.

“The skunk nipped his index finger causing a small puncture” about 12:15 p.m., said Bellmead police Detective Kory Martin.

The animal was taken to the Waco Animal Shelter, where the skunk tested positive for rabies.

The officer received a pre-exposure vaccination for rabies after a stray cat bit him earlier this year, Martin said.
