Walburg, Texas -- A man allegedly tried to blow up well-known eatery Walburg German Restaurant earlier this month, police said in an arrest report filed Friday.
Ryan Killingsworth, 38, of Hutto, was charged March 19 with arson, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years inprisonandafine of up to $10,000. He was still behind bars Tuesday morning.
On March 14, Mr. Killingsworth planted a ramshackle bomb outside the restaurant at 3777 FM 972, in downtown Walburg, police said. He made the improvised explosive device using plastic gasoline containers, a metal aerosol can, duct tape and blue paper shop towel.
Restaurant owner Ronald Tippelt found the bomb at the back of the building against a wall with the wick lit and burned down to the container, the report said.

Walburg was in my rolling territory when I was a college student and I spent many Oktoberfests at the biergarten behind the old mercantile/restaurant building. I am amused that they describe Walburg as having a "downtown" since the population is only a few hundred people.

(21,046 posts)Frank's in Schulenberg next? That's the halfway point to San Antonio and mandatory rest stop. I remember when it was downtown before it was on I-10. Yeah I'm old.

It's been a long time since I've been to Schulenberg. However, I preferred taking the less-travelled route rolling on old US 90-Alt through Wied and Shiner .

(2 posts)Rolling, you say? You didn't go to SU did you? I've heard much about the old Walburg rolls and the glorious deeds of old miscreants.

(112,056 posts)and I was one of those miscreants.
I knew every county road within twenty miles of Georgetown. My rolling territory included Round Rock, Liberty Hill, Florence, Stillhouse Hollow, Theon, Granger and Hutto. I was out there from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. and also spent a few nights camping or sleeping in the back seat of my car. I was even a navigator on one of the road rallies for one of the fraternities although I wasn't a member.

(2 posts)I just graduated. Sadly, rolling has died out - mostly, just like the Booties got drowned by Lake Georgetown. And the road rallies wouldn't fly with WilCo cops these days.
Ahh but the rolls would still happen now and then. And roll-lore was something all the Fraternity alums (I was in Sig) would make sure you knew about. Sometimes I go up there just to drive around those roads and get nostalgic.
By the way, Theon is one of the prettiest views in Williamson County. It makes me think I'm in the Czech Republic (which invariably makes me want beer). Believe it or not, we would actually walk out to Walburg on a few occasions to quench our thirst after walking and get driven back.
Glad to meet someone who was part of this esoteric history!
