Does anyone here know more on the backdrop of this story regarding Vermont dumping nuclear
waste in Texas? http://archives.texasobserver.org/issue/1998/09/11#page=11

1. Some more links on this...
Note: Politifact rates this as true but lacking some context
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2015/sep/22/fact-checking-viral-graphic-critical-bernie-sander/ Bangor Daily News article on this from 1998 http://archive.bangordailynews.com/1998/07/30/maine-vermont-nuclear-waste-compact-approved-by-house/ Maine-Vermont nuclear waste compact approved by House By Paul Kane States News Service, Special to the BDN This story was published on July 30, 1998 in all editions of the Bangor Daily News WASHINGTON — The House approved Wednesday a deal that would allow Maine and Vermont to dump their low-level nuclear waste from places like the now-closed Maine Yankee in a poor Hispanic town in west Texas. In a 305-117 vote, the House approved the compact without any of the troublesome amendments that had been previously attached to the tri-state deal, setting up a final showdown in the Senate that will determine its fate. |

4. Here's another link:
It talks about the "environmental racism" of Sanders-sponsored legislation that allowed the dumping of Vermont nuclear waste into a mostly Latino border town in Texas, with the help of Bernie's BFF at the time, Dubya:
http://social-ecology.org/wp/1998/10/the-texas-vermont-maine-nuclear-dump-bringing-environmental-racism-home/ Chitown Kev provided a lot of info and links in this thread about it: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1251617475 Also, Sanders' wife, Jane, was a Commissioner on the Texas Low-Level Radioactive Waste Commission - Vermont Compact. Here’s the thread that talks about that, with lots of links in there too: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1251621460 |

5. No, but the title is libelous for one thing.
Sanders never said "Drop Dead" or anything even close. And using that phrase in conjunction with nuclear waste was beyond tasteless. (and it was low-level waste like medical gloves) The reporters made a clumsy attempt at trying to be cute with a two-fer that implied Sanders had not just brushed off the marchers' concerns but had a callous disregard for the residents' health risks.
You're in the media business Steve. If you approve of that kind of writing, well, that says a lot about you. It deserved the hide. |
