Texas Wesleyan University preps for legal action over female volleyball players with rhabdomyolysis

After eight Texas Woman’s University volleyball students came down with rhabdomyolysis, a muscle deterioration condition from being overworked, lawyers are now preparing the university for a lawsuit.

TWU hired Buckner, a law firm based in Sunrise, Florida, on Aug. 29, and the Denton Record-Chronicle requested documents related to the hire, including the university’s contract with the firm. In a letter to the Texas Attorney General’s Office, TWU’s in-house lawyer, Destinee Waiters, said part of why the contract should not be released is because of upcoming litigation.

“The students are all first year student-athletes who were being instructed by TWU Athletic staff,” Waiters wrote. “TWU was contacted by parents of the student-athletes which caused TWU to reasonably anticipate litigation arising out of the matter.”

As of Thursday, nothing was filed in district or federal court.
