Travis commissioners consider $500,000 payout for Judge Julie Kocurek

Travis County commissioners are considering a $500,000 payment to state District Judge Julie Kocurek over the handling of a threat that was made soon before a gunman opened fire on her in November 2015 outside her home, the American-Statesman and KVUE-TV have learned.

The award would settle any claims against the county Kocurek could seek in a lawsuit, including why the county didn’t do more to investigate the threat against an unnamed judge and why law enforcement didn’t act faster to protect her and her colleagues who preside over criminal courts.

Kocurek was never warned her life might have been in danger prior to the attack.

County officials have been negotiating with the Kocurek family for several months and are expected to consider the payment at a meeting next week.
