Travis County sheriff: I will not allow fear, misinformation to be guiding principles

Embattled Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez says she “will not allow fear and misinformation to be my guiding principles" as leading Texas Republicans, including the governor, have criticized her new policy that places limits on requests from federal immigration officials.

“I respect the job of our state leaders, but I will not allow fear and misinformation to be my guiding principles as a leader sworn to protect this community,” Hernandez said in a statement Thursday.

In her first public response to critics of her policy to limit so-called detainer requests from immigration authorities, Hernandez said she is “following all state and federal laws, and upholding constitutional rights to due process for all in our criminal justice system.”

She continued to argue that allowing immigration officials unfettered access to individuals who are suspected of being undocumented immigrants makes community crime prevention harder.
