Hearne leaders agree on little except that rifts are bringing unwanted publicity for town

HEARNE -- No agreements were reached in Hearne on Tuesday on some of the City Council's most contentious topics, though a recurring thread throughout the meeting was that the near-constant division is bringing unwanted attention to the small town.

The topic came up first during a debate on Mayor Ruben Gomez's ability to vote, which the council debated for about 20 minutes before Councilwomen Shirley Harris and Martha Castilleja briefly left the room after the discussion became heated. An audience member approached the podium when the meeting resumed to tell the council that he avoids telling people he's from Hearne because of the negative media attention the city has attracted, adding that the tension at City Hall has affected friendships.

Harris echoed the resident's sentiments later in the meeting during a discussion of Interim City Manager John Naron's "unprofessional demeanor" during a previous meeting. The council later deadlocked on his termination.

"How can we allow a person to come here and act like this and divide the community as he has divided the community?" Harris said. "This town is known for, if you ever come to Hearne, you won't come back. Not now. Not because of the way we are being portrayed."
