Austin Medics report 39 people treated for K2-related illness Saturday

Austin-Travis County EMS is reporting 39 people have been treated since midnight Saturday for illness related to the drug K2.

Of the 39 people EMS had seen as of 7 p.m. Saturday, 14 were taken to the hospital, medics said. On Thursday, Austin city leaders addressed the surge in K2-related illnesses reported downtown at a meeting in City Hall.

Since the beginning of March, Austin police officers have made 64 arrests related to delivery or possession of K2, city officials said Thursday.

Police and emergency medical providers regularly rush over to the ARCH on Seventh Street to care for people who are convulsing, passed out, violently lashing out or exhibiting other side effects.
