H-E-B now largest private employer in Texas with 100,000 workers

H-E-B is now the state’s largest private employer with more than 100,000 workers on its payroll in Texas and Mexico, making the supermarket chain one of the largest retail employers in the U.S., the company announced Tuesday.

The San Antonio company now has more than 90,000 full and part-time workers — which it dubs “partners” — in 332 Texas stores and more than 10,000 employees across 56 locations in Mexico, H-E-B said in a news release.

H-E-B, which was the 12th-largest private employer in the U.S. last year, would break into the top ten with more people than Round Rock-based Dell Technologies, which had 101,800 workers last year, according to Forbes magazine.

The company, which sells groceries along with electronics and apparel in its Plus stores, gained ground on Florida-based Publix Super Markets and Idaho-based Albertsons — which had 180,000 and 164,000 employees, respectively, according to Forbes.
