Attorney General Ken Paxton will fight felony indictment in December trial
HOUSTON Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton will face a jury Dec. 11 to fight allegations he broke state securities law during his time as a state representative.
The trial will take place in Harris County, where a jury will be chosen Dec. 1. Paxton, a Republican, will first be tried on third-degree felony charges stemming from allegations that he failed to register as an investment adviser representative with state securities regulators.
After that case is settled, he will be back in court to fight two first-degree felony fraud charges. He's accused of duping investors into buying stock in a McKinney technology startup, Servergy Inc. One of these investors, Byron Cook, is a Republican state representative and House committee chairman from Corsicana.
Paxton's lawyers and the special prosecutors pursuing charges against him agreed to the December trial date during a meeting in the Harris County Courthouse on Thursday. Paxton's first trial, which will begin the same day political candidates must signal their intention to run for office, is expected to last no longer than nine days.
