Shriners Hospitals for Children in Galveston partially evacuated after fire

GALVESTON -- Shriners Hospitals for Children — Galveston was partially evacuated Tuesday morning, after a small fire broke out on the building's second floor.

At 11:37 a.m., the Galveston Fire Department was called to the burn hospital, at 815 Market Street, because of a report of a fire. Galveston fire chief Mike Wisko said the fire appeared to start on a bed or a piece of furniture.

Employees and patients in the area of the fire left the building. Some patients were brought to the University of Texas Medical Branch's Blocker Burn Unit across the street.

The situation was under control by 12 p.m. No one was injured. The fire department was working to remove smoke from the building. The sprinkler system did not activate, Wisko said.
