In Mission, border wall critics plan weekend protests

Texas’ first border wall battles may be waged in Hidalgo County, where activists say a proposal for the wall’s construction could separate communities from valued landmarks and significantly hurt a wildlife refuge home to endangered species.

Critics of the proposed path plan to amplify their message this weekend through two rallies in the Rio Grande Valley, one of which is an ecumenical procession Saturday to the historic church that inspired the city of Mission’s name. Protest organizers say a proposed wall would cut off the chapel, known as La Lomita, from the rest of the town.

On Sunday, a “protest hike” through Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is planned, intended to promote protection of the natural area.

Officials have said what is shown in U.S. Customs and Border Protection “pre-decision” maps, stamped July 21, is a preliminary proposal that has no current funding, adding that work is limited to research and planning.
