BAMC employees test positive for bacteria that causes Legionnaires' disease
SAN ANTONIO -- Brooke Army Medical Center has relocated some of its staff after two employees who work in an adjacent building tested positive for the type of bacteria that causes Legionnaires' disease, which can be fatal.
Two people who work in a building next to the hospital are being treated for Legionella bacteria a microorganism transmitted by breathing in a contaminated mist or vapor that could lead to a type of pneumonia called Legionnaires' disease.
No BAMC patients have presented similar flu-like symptoms related to the bacteria.
"Because there were two cases associated with the same facility or other common location within one year, this is considered an outbreak per the Emerging and Acute Infectious ?Disease Guidelines," reads a BAMC news release.
