Lawsuit alleges state hospital employees abused patients
In a lawsuit filed Wednesday, a former employee for a state hospital outside Dallas is alleging he witnessed employees abusing patients while he was there and that he was fired for reporting what he saw.
Ethan Vestal worked as a psychiatric nursing assistant at Terrell State Hospital from July to December last year, his suit says.
During that time, the suit says, Vestal witnessed a coworker physically choke and slam a patient to the ground before another coworker told him not to report it; a patient with two black eyes and covered in bruises told Vestal a staff member had assaulted him; and Vestal noticed that a minor at the hospital had choke and scratch marks on his neck.
Officials with the Texas Department of Health and Human Services said they could not comment on the allegations since their department has not yet been served with the lawsuit.
