Suspected Beaumont bomber arrested

A Beaumont man who sent threatening notes to local authorities and residents has been arrested in connection with two explosive devices found outside heavily trafficked buildings in the past month, federal authorities said Friday.

Jonathan Matthew Torres, 40, is charged with use of an explosive to damage property, mailing a threatening communication and possession of an unregistered destructive device, according to an announcement by the U.S. Attorney's office.

Torres, a military veteran, will appear in federal court on May 29, the office said. If convicted, he faces 5 to 20 years in federal prison.

Authorities executed a search warrant Thursday afternoon at the man's residence in the 4400 block of El Paso Street in Beaumont, the U.S. Attorney's office said. "Multiple containers of the same type of explosive material" used in the two recent incidents were discovered in the house, the statement said.
