Six Texas children die of whooping cough, prompting statewide health advisory

CORPUS CHRISTI — Six children have died this year of whooping cough in Texas, the most since 2005, prompting the state Thursday to issue a health advisory urging immunization.

Five of the six were babies younger than 2 months old, including three who died at Driscoll Children's Hospital. The sixth death was an older child in Dallas County with underlying medical conditions who was not vaccinated. There have been 1,153 cases statewide.

The deaths underscore the importance of vaccination for parents and others who will have close contact with babies, Dr. Jaime Fergie, pediatric infectious disease specialist at Driscoll Children's Hospital, said.

"It's critically important to get the message across: These babies need to be protected," he said. "Most of the cases come from the mothers and then the fathers, grandparents, brothers and sisters. This is an infection that most of the time is acquired at home."

And then it takes two-plus weeks for the protection to kick in. Everyone else around this baby should have been vaccinated before so they wouldn't have subjected this infant to this horrible disease.
I suspect some that did the infecting were adults whose vaccinations were out of date.
