Man suspected of killing George H.W. Bush's cardiologist held a '20-year-old grudge,' police say

Police say the man suspected of gunning down a Texas cardiologist who once treated George H.W. Bush had a long-standing grudge against the doctor after his mother died during surgery.

Dr. Mark Hausknecht, 65, was shot and killed while riding his bicycle through the Texas Medical Center the morning of July 20.

Police issued an arrest warrant Wednesday for Joseph James Pappas, 62, Houston police Chief Art Acevedo said. Officers searched Pappas' home but didn't find him there, he said, and Pappas remained at large Wednesday afternoon.

Police believe Pappas is dangerous and suicidal, Acevedo said. He said officers found evidence that clearly ties Pappas to the crime.
