27 rescued from Nueces River in Uvalde County after flash flooding in Chalk Bluff Park

Over two dozen people were rescued from the Nueces River at Chalk Bluff Park Sunday, according to the Uvalde County Sheriff's Office, after as much as 11 inches of rain fell over the area overnight and into the morning.

The sheriff's office posted an update at 1:45 p.m. that 27 visitors were rescued from high water at Chalk Bluff Park. They are receiving medical attention but no major injuries were reported, the post stated.

The Uvalde Fire Department and helicopters are completing a secondary sweep of the river for any other people, according to the sheriff's office.

At about 11:30 a.m. the sheriff's office posted video of a helicopter taking life vests to visitors stranded on a vehicle at Chalk Bluff Park.

At about 12:30 p.m. the Uvalde County Office of Emergency Management announced the closure of Hwy. 55 due to flooding.

The sheriff's office said several families are unable to exit the park due to high water and are asking the public to use extreme caution at low water crossings and obey all 'Closed Road' signs.
