Texas Democrat Beto O'Rourke goes on TV in Spanish as poll shows lagging Latino support

WASHINGTON — Democrat Beto O’Rourke released his first Spanish-language TV ad Tuesday, to go on air this week in eight Texas media markets.

The buy comes as Democratic strategists have warned that Mr. O’Rourke needs to ramp up his outreach with Latino voters if he wants to unseat Republican Ted Cruz — one of four members of the Senate of Hispanic descent — this fall.

Mr. Cruz’s campaign did not respond to multiple requests for comment on its Latino outreach in the Texas Senate race.

His first re-election ad, released last week, focuses on Mr. O’Rourke’s comments supporting football players who kneel during the national anthem. The ad features veteran Marine Sgt. Tim Lee who lost his legs in Vietnam who says players should stand.

What I still cannot understand is why so many people despise cruz, but yet, will still vote for him. Does that "R" at the end of his name have some sort of magnetism that attracts non-thinking folks to it?

One would think that with the treatment this administration has given to Latinos crossing the border that it would be enough for them to stop supporting republicans. Can't they see that whenever a Latino politician, or a black politician for that matter, becomes a republican the republican party uses them until the end of the campaign? after that they send them to the basement with a red stapler (Office Space movie).

One of many examples was Mel Martinez, this guy campaigned so hard for GW, he was taken to Washington to never be heard of again, he was sent into oblivion, and he never recovered from that. Not sure if a year or two later he was back in Florida back to practicing law, his political career ruined.

Sometimes I think that many Latinos think that being republican is cool, so they become republican to consistently vote against their interest. How can the not understand that republicans despise them, or anyone who is not white?

Because the system of racism/white supremacy changes "the rules" whenever it is politically expedient, where "Hispanics" (of any ethnicity) can briefly enjoy the status of "honorary white", no matter what actual "color" or "race" they are, until they are no longer considered "useful", after which they get relegated to the "dredges" of "minority person of color".

I doubt the ones voting for him despise him (or care either way). I think this is a case of many many people not voting at all.

There is a large Mexican-American community in Texas that needs to step up or they will find themselves suddenly deported even if they have been in the U.S. for generations (which I expect is some of the fear of trying to get registered to vote and then voting).

Mexican-American does not equal the Cuban-Canadian-American that Carnival Cruz is because the Hispanic community is far from being a monolith. And I think this is part of the problem of doing "outreach" because "Hispanic" represents a number of (sometimes at-odds) ethnicities and nationality-descendants, so "outreach" spearheaded by non-Mexican descendants to Mexican-descendants, may be lukewarm. Anyone associated with the Castro brothers (who are Mexican descendants) and their organization, would definitely be helpful. Even if they have to pull Mexican-American groups from California to go to Texas to speak with the Mexican-American community there, something needs to happen to get them to engage in their state's elections and vote for Beto. Similar needs to happen in Florida too among the Puerto Ricans, especially to engage the thousands who have recently moved there, so they can start changing the government in Florida to benefit folks other than the 1% and the loons (and go for Gillum & Nelson).

they are the key to ANY chance of Beto upsetting Cruz.
