No legal recourse for Union Pacific layoffs, Palestine mayor says
Mayor Steve Presley said Thursday the city has no legal recourse to reverse the layoffs by Union Pacific of 30 Palestine workers in late April.
After meeting with UP representatives, Presley said the layoffs don't violate the railroad's contract with the city to retain a certain number of local workers -- even with 30 fewer workers.
The contract calls for the railroad to retain, in Palestine, slightly more than 0.5 percent of its total workforce nationwide. The local number has declined over the years, along with the railroad's aggregate workforce.
Asked if he was satisfied with what company representatives told him, Presley said: I'm certainly not satisfied we have 30 fewer jobs in Palestine. I'll never be satisfied with that. But I'm confident UP is meeting the contract.
