Confederate monument at Capitol vandalized
AUSTIN -- The Confederate Soldiers Monument on the state Capitol grounds was found vandalized Sunday with the word “racists” spray-painted in red across the monument’s base.
A state trooper discovered the vandalism early Sunday morning, according to a news release. The State Preservation Board oversaw the removal and cleanup of the vandalism Sunday.
State police are searching for those responsible, the release said.
Erected in 1903, the monument features five bronze figures representing the infantry, cavalry, artillery and Navy, and Confederate President Jefferson Davis in the center. The granite base lists Civil War battles and the names of 13 states that withdrew from the Union, 11 of which joined the Confederate States of America.
