Christus to close, raze St. Mary Hospital in Port Arthur
Christus St. Mary Hospital, site of tens of thousands of emergency room visits annually on Port Arthur's southwest side, will be shuttered within 45 days and torn down. At least half of the hospital's staff are expected to lose their jobs.
Hospital executives, who gathered Monday in front of the chapel's stained-glass windows, cited declining use of the facility's 227 patient beds as well as shifting demographics in the city.
"Over the last 10 to 15 years, we have seen a steady decline of inpatient admissions, as most hospitals across the country have seen," president and CEO of Christus Southeast Texas Health System Paul Trevino said afterward. "But I think the added challenge has been a decline of activity around St. Mary as populations in our market have started to move north."
The hospital system is encouraging patients who currently use St. Mary to consider the Christus Southeast Texas Outpatient Center Mid-County on Ninth Avenue. That facility also features a 24-hour emergency room, but it is 12 miles from the existing hospital and even farther from the ZIP code where most of St. Mary's existing ER patients live.
