Why Democrats are happy Donald Trump is spending time campaigning in Texas
AUSTIN If the Democrats' strategy heading into the 2020 election cycle is to make President Donald Trump spend time and resources in Texas, long the nation's most reliably Republican big state, there's evidence to suggest it's working.
On Thursday, the president plans one of his signature rallies in Dallas' American Airlines Center. The event comes less than a month after Trump, accompanied by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, drew an estimated 50,000 people to a rally at NRG Stadium in Houston. And in recent months, Trump has made appearances in El Paso and San Antonio.
But the head of the national Democratic Party said his goal for Texas is far more ambitious than simply making Trump fight for the state that has been safely in the Republican column in every presidential election since 1980.
Democrats are going to pick the GOP's pocket in Texas next year, DNC Chairman Tom Perez said during a visit to Austin last week.
