Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick takes aim at George P. Bush over Alamo redesign

By John C Moritz

AUSTIN — Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick took a direct swipe Tuesday at Land Commissioner George P. Bush and his agency's plan for renovating the Alamo, which includes relocating the 60-foot monument honoring the 189 Texicans who died defending it.

Patrick, who like Bush is a Republican in his second term, singled out a comment last week by the land commissioner who said reports that a statue of Mexican Gen. Santa Anna was planned for the site was "an outright lie" and "flat-out racist."

"Recently, the (General Land Office) Commissioner and a member of his staff have derided anyone who disagrees with the Alamo redesign as a small vocal minority who are liars and racists," Patrick said in a statement. "This is offensive and inaccurate."

Patrick's remarks relate to the commissioner's reaction to a Facebook post saying the "Reimagine the Alamo" project would include an homage to the Mexican soldiers and their leader who waged a 13-day siege of the Alamo before the 18-minute battle at the iconic mission.

The story is unclear but presenting an "homage" to Santa Anna is a really bad idea. TomSlick Dec 2019 #1

The history of the Texas revolution is fraught. Texas revolutionaries were not fighting for truth and justice. The Texas revolution was started by Anglo settlers determined to protect slavery. Nevertheless, the order by Santa Anna that no quarter would be given to the defenders of the Alamo - El Degüello - was an unspeakable war crime. An homage to a war criminal is a really bad idea.
