Fort Worth chief vows to fire officers caught driving drunk

FORT WORTH -- One day after another of his officers was arrested for drunken driving, Fort Worth Police Chief Jeff Halstead said Thursday that any officer whose DWI accusation is "sustained" by internal affairs will be fired.

"I'm not going to wait until your criminal case goes through ... proceedings," he said.

Previously, Halstead had pledged to decide on a case-by-case basis how to handle alcohol-involved cases. Officers convicted of DWI faced anywhere from a 15-day suspension to termination.

The change in policy comes after the Wednesday arrest of officer Nicolas Ramirez on suspicion of DWI and less than a month after Halstead's chief of staff, Maj. Paul Henderson, was arrested on a DWI charge in Parker County.

What's amazing is that that many have been arrested. That's a pretty big town I guess though. brewens Jan 2013 #1

In a smaller town, they can look out for each other more. In the 80's our yokel sheriff used to call for an escort from his favorite bar. One of the deputies or city cops would swing by and follow him home.

It may be a little different here now but not much. You don't see cops drinking at the bars but a DUI is unheard of. It would have to be a real asshole that the rest of the guys wanted gone for that to happen.

They have had A LOT of teen and child deaths in Ft Worth...fires and car wrecks. When you start seeing a major change in behavior, you need to review more than just the DWI.
