Errors take Texas Women’s Health Program database offline; state vows fix
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission on Tuesday took down its online database of participants in a new, state-funded women’s health program after many of the listed providers said they were not participants.
Before Jan. 1, the Texas Women’s Health Program was 90 percent federally funded. The new state program — administered by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission — launched amid confusion, with reports statewide of errors in the listing of certified providers.
The Dallas Morning News this week reported 15 percent of the 336 providers listed in the database knew they were part of the program or were taking new patients.
Commission spokeswoman Linda Edwards Gockel said the agency took the website off line to “clean it up.”

Original item at 10:57 a.m. on January 15: AUSTIN — The homepage of the Texas Women’s Health Program no longer directs potential clients to search for a doctor near their zip code.
Update at 3:29 p.m.:
Health and Human Services Commission spokeswoman Linda Edwards Gockel said she expects the list will be up in about a week.
“We are working on the website look up list to make it more useful for women searching for a new provider,” she said. “We are making the changes including taking out entries for locations that do not provide a comprehensive family planning exam, and reorganizing results to list first those providers able to serve the most patients.”
