The first candidate to announce a run for governor is...

MCALLEN, Texas – Miriam Martinez, a Mexican-born journalist and activist who became a U.S. citizen barely two years ago, wants to make history in 2014 as the first Latino woman to become governor of Texas.

“Texas needs new blood and that’s what I offer. I’m not intimidated by the millions that other candidates may have or are able to collect, what’s important is who gets the most votes and that’s what I’ll achieve by expressing my ideals to the Texas electorate,” Martinez said in an interview with Efe.

The Republican politician will offer a “political platform that includes everyone, from war veterans without medical care to those who live in poor neighborhoods all along the Mexican border.”

Martinez, 40, said that running for the most important public office in Texas isn’t a stunt but rather the product of the current reality of the state in the absence of an obvious front-runner for the 2014 contest.

It's in the excerpt. Do you give away your vote that easily - not even reading 4 paragraphs about a candidate?

And you'll have to vote in the GOP primary in the spring of 2014 to support her, because she's not making a runoff with Greg Abbott.

It's looking like this might be the most viewed thread I've ever posted in the Texas group and it's about a Republican!

The closest I ever came to journalism was as a layout editor and caption writer on the college newspaper that I worked on for a semester. After all of these years I've just learned that the secret for a great headline is to stay up all night getting wasted! Thanks folks.

15. Some more background on Martinez from "The Monitor":

Martinez, 40, owns a small media company that caters to Mexican clients and hosts a Spanish-language talk show called “Red Hot Texas Politics with Miriam Martinez” on KIRT-AM. Before running for District 41 last year, Martinez was perhaps best known for her broadcast work Univision and an interview with the San Antonio Express-News about her extensive cosmetic surgery.

“I’m your Hispanic Margaret Thatcher,” Martinez said. “Half Eva Perón and a little touch of Madonna.”

Tough competition — Perry hasn’t said whether he’ll run for re-election and Attorney General Greg Abbott has signaled he intends to run regardless — doesn’t concern Martinez, a political newcomer who didn’t register to vote until November 2011.

“I don’t see Abbott as a threat. I don’t see Perry as a threat,” Martinez said. “The difference between them and myself is I’m Martinez. And there are more Martinez in Texas than Abbott and Perry.”
