Rep. Steve Stockman: ‘The right to keep and bear arms is granted by God’

Texas congressman Steve Stockman is about as strong a supporter of gun rights as there is.

He believes that the right to keep and bear arms is protected by the Bill of Rights. But he believes that gun rights run far deeper than the U.S. Constitution.

“The right to keep and bear arms is granted by God and protecting from government aggression by the Constitution,” he said today in explaining his opposition to the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty. “It is not subject to the whims of global totalitarians massed in New York City.”

Stockman, a Republican from Friendswood, was one of 17 Texas Republicans to sign a letter to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry demanding they not sign the U.N. treaty. Another 113 lawmakers joined the conservative Texans.

More, including copy of the letter from Rep. Stockman to President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry along with the signatories to the letter is available at http://blog.chron.com/txpotomac/2013/05/rep-steve-stockman-the-right-to-keep-and-bear-arms-is-granted-by-god/ .

Apparently God wasn't resting on the seventh day when he granted these rights.

The right to bear arms is given by the state, not by whatever GAWD you happen to follow. This idiocy irritates the bejesus out of me, you know.

I would like to think that, just by living, one is granted air and water and food and a decent house and the right to continue working for yourself. That's not true, and it hasn't been true for a long time, if ever.

In a civilized society (if that isn't an oxymoron), rights are granted by the group, as being the least harm for the most people. If the state thinks that you are doing something that is going to harm your neighbour...or the state...see how fast your rights get taken away.

It is thus now, and has been thus for a long time. If you work in a 'right to work' state, your employer can fire you if he doesn't like your face. You can get fired for being fat, or ugly, or gay, or 'too pretty.' It has always been the case when people gather in groups; it's a power struggle, a struggle for the most resources, it's a fact of life.

You aren't born with anything but your body and your breath, and it's the only thing you have that you take with you.

Put all their income on the same footing as the income earned by working families.

Blessed are the handgun owners, for they shall let their little children shoot themselves in the head so they can come unto me.
Blessed are the AK-47 toters, for they shall dine on squirrel all the days of their lives.

Yeah, I don't remember Abraham putting a gun to Isaac's head when God told Abe to sacrifice him.

He maketh me to line up beer cans For target practice; He restoreth my ammo, he leadeth me through the aisles of WalMart to the gun counter; yay, tho I profess to be a responsible gun owner, I shall carelessly leave loaded weapons around to introduce my household to Death; thou preparest a table before me in the presence of Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly and all the victims of Newtown; thou anointest my head with gun oil, my BB pellets spill all over the floor. Surely paranoia shall reign in my brain all the days of my life.

If I had spent more time on it, it would have come out more clever.

It's fun meshing those two cultures, eh?
