Insurance group: Hailstorm caused $400M in damage
The Insurance Council of Texas released a statement Monday estimating insured losses from the May 28 storm will total about $400 million, far exceeding the record set in 2004 of $175 million.
An estimated 35,000 vehicles and thousands of homes were damaged in the May 28 storm, according to the statement. Hail up to the size of baseballs pounded vehicles, knocked out windshields and damaged roofs.
The punishing hail hit well after the sun had set.
The storm exited the city limits at approximately midnight after dropping large hail over portions of the city that caused damage to car dealerships and residential and commercial structures, according to the severe weather report from the Amarillo office of the National Weather service. The Amarillo Botanical Gardens suffered complete destruction due to hail up to the size of baseballs.
