Brownsville Official: 'It’s not ricin'
Brownsville Police said a shipping facility temporarily shut down due to a report of a suspicious package will likely reopen later today now that investigation showed a white, powdery substance found on an envelope was non-lethal.
Police Spokesperson J.J. Trevino said officials were still conducting tests on the substance, which was discovered Thursday at about 10:30 a.m. at US Logistics, a facility near the Brownsville South Padre Island Airport that handles delivery between the U.S. State Department and destinations in Central and South America.
Its not ricin, he said, addressing rumors the substance found was the same powdery substance found in recently intercepted letters addressed to politicians, including President Barack Obama.
Brownsville Police officers were on the scene preventing traffic from approaching the facility throughout the morning. Trucks were not permitted to enter the Vermillion Road facility while FBI agents, Brownsville Fire and Brownsville Hazardous Materials teams investigated the package.
