Cuccinelli was somewhat reluctant to revisit the recently ended gubernatorial election, but maintained that money, not ideas, was the difference maker in his defeat.

“I wasn’t beaten with an agenda,” he said. “I was outspent by around $15 million, and an awful lot that was untruthful that was utilized to beat me, with the help of the media — either in the form of passive or active” involvement, he added.

“We rolled out specific policy proposals from May right through to the end, and I don’t know that there was an enormous amount of traction for that.”

The ongoing gift scandal that erupted around McDonnell in the spring also placed a drag on Cuccinelli’s campaign. ... “Everybody turned into a tabloid,” he said, referring to media coverage of the investigation. “It drove election issues off of front pages and therefore out of the visibility of voters, and so as we were trying to have substantive conversations it made it a lot harder to do so.”
