Kaine, Warner offer pros, cons as potential Clinton running mate

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is likely to announce her choice of a running mate in the next few weeks, and Virginia’s two U.S. senators — Timothy M. Kaine and Mark R. Warner — are among the names that have been circulated as possible choices.

Numerous published reports have suggested Kaine, who will campaign with Clinton on Thursday in Northern Virginia, is on Clinton’s short list, along with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro.

Meanwhile, others familiar with the process have said the potential list is closer to six to eight names and stressed that Clinton’s inner circle — which includes her husband, former President Bill Clinton — could pivot at the last minute in their decision.

Larry Sabato, head of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, lists 18 possibilities on his “Crystal Ball” politics website. He puts Kaine at the top of the list and Warner in 12th position.
